Google Will Punish Your Site After April 21st

Google Mobile Friendly Webste Fivenson Studios Graphic Design

Back in November 2014, Google gave its first guidance about the impending algorithm changes to affect mobile SEO which were summarized in our past blog post Top 7 Marketing Trends

More recently, Google has been unusually specific and has revealed on its blog that there will be an algorithm update on the 21st April 2015, that will expand their use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.

Google has announced that this update will take place in ‘real-time’, meaning that if changes are made to make websites more mobile-friendly, as soon as the changes have been indexed by Google the benefits will be shown.

Google has also said that this algorithm update will impact sites on a page-by-page basis, meaning that only those pages that are not mobile-friendly will be impacted, rather than the wider domain.

If your site is missing these 'Mobile-Friendly' labels you are likely to have a problem come the 21st of April.

A little about Google’s mobile-friendly updates

1.The update will heavily favor mobile-friendly pages in mobile search results.

2.“Mobile” means smartphones, not tablets.

3.The update is expected to roll out April 21, 2015, and could take up to a week to reach all sites.

4.The update will only effect search results on mobile devices, not desktop search results.

5.In addition to mobile-friendly web pages, this update will also improve rankings of index apps, if the user is logged in, and has the app installed.

6.Web pages that are not mobile-friendly can and will be dropped from high rankings in favor of mobile-friendly web pages.

7.Only the non-mobile-friendly page’s on your website will be negatively effected in mobile search results.

8.Websites and web pages that are not mobile-friendly will not be effected in desktop search results.

9.An entire website doesn’t need to be mobile-friendly for one mobile-friendly page, on that site, to be ranked high in mobile search results.

10.The mobile-friendly update will effect all languages, world-wide.

11.Google considers each page either mobile-friendly or not. There is no in-between.

12.Google recommends using responsive design above all other mobile-friendly options. This will minimize the risk crawling errors.

13.Google’s mobile-friendly update will effect more sites than Panda and Penguin.

14.Mobile-friendly pages must build a reputation for quality content on their own, apart from their desktop equivalent.

15.Mobile-friendly pages show a “Mobile-friendly” label in mobile search results.

Implementing a Sustainable Social Media Marketing Strategy

When you enter the world of social media marketing, you should be aware that every move your business makes on social networks should be a cogwheel in a larger marketing strategy. In other words, every post, comment, Tweet or shared content should work towards a singular goal, and guided by a pre-defined marketing plan. It isn’t as complicated as it seems, when a well-designed social media marketing strategy is deployed. You don’t have to be a social media guru to do this. These steps will teach you how to drive your marketing actions on social media towards a desired goal.

Social Media Strategy Fivenson Studios Graphic Design Ann Arbor Mi

The Definition

In a nutshell, a social media marketing plan is a collection of every action you plan to launch on social networks on behalf of your business marketing strategy. It should consist of an audit on your accounts present-day rating, goals for where you want them to be in a defined point in future and the tools and tactics that you will use to make it happen.

Your plan will be more effective in its implementation if you make it in high resolution – determine the smallest part to the detail. This is not a part where a broad strategy approach works. Keep it concise and specific, while using this plan as an indicator that will show you whether you are making progress in social media or you are staying behind.

Creating Objectives and Goals

By defining social media objectives you can react in a short time and adjust the strategy when your actions are not meeting your expectations. The goals should follow up your marketing strategy. They are a measure of your success and the likely outcome of your investment. Goals should focus more on advanced metrics like generated leads, referred or sentiment website traffic. These goals should be set using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound) approach.

Social Media Audit

One of elements of your social media marketing plan will be the assessment of your actual social media use. You need to find out who is connected to you on social media and which social media platforms your target audience uses. In the same way, if you want to establish a sound social media strategy you should make a comparison of your media presence with the one of your competitors. The audit will crystalize which accounts are bearing fruit and which are unnecessary.

Updating or Creating New Accounts

When you have audited your accounts, you need to improve your online image. Analyze which social media platforms work best for your goals and make profiles on every platform of interest, which will be based on your broader business goals and the target audience. It pays out to know that each social media platform attracts different audience and should be approached in a different way.

Learn from the Best

Your consumers and prospects are already active on social media, and so is your competition. That means that you have a vast pool of experiences and good, but also the bad, examples to learn from. Analyze your competitor’s successful campaigns and implement those elements on your business marketing plan. Also, try to draw inspiration from your consumers. Emulate their Tweet style, pay attention where and when they are active. Finally, you can look up to corporate giants like Virgin Group or Red Bull who are making great things in social media marketing.

5 Innovative Ways You Can Use Call Tracking to Optimize Marketing Efforts

5 Innovative Ways You Can Use Call Tracking to Optimize Marketing Efforts

In today's modern world where the consumer has all the power, an integrated and multi-channel approach to marketing is becoming increasingly important, and incorporating call tracking into your campaigns can open up innovative ways that you can optimize them.

Tracking Online and Offline Advertising Mediums

When people talk about phone call tracking and analytics, they think it's a limited niche with limited options. In reality, however, the limitations are mostly due to lack of an innovative approach to merging call tracking with the rest of a brand's marketing and sales campaign. You can actually use call analytics to track the performance of advertising channels. Better yet: call tracking actually tracks both offline and online channels.

Here's a quick example: how do you track an advertising campaign that uses newspaper ads and pay per click (PPC) ads? Simply place separate phone numbers in both channels to track calls. Combine the data from inquiries, qualified leads, and conversions from the phone calls to the other data collected from both channels like newspaper reach and PPC ad frequency and click-through rates and you have a comprehensive overview of offline and online performance under one campaign.

Monitoring Keyword Performance in PPC

Since we already touched upon PPC, let's look at another innovative way call tracking can contribute to marketing optimization: keyword performance tracking.

Keyword performance is often a metric relegated to Google analytics and the digital realm, but any conversion optimization expert will tell you that keywords play a vital role in the persuasion of target audiences. Keywords are much more nuanced than people often think, especially in paid advertising.

Keyword performance affect at least three main factors that all contribute to the efficacy of a PPC ad:

  • Keyword targeting that matches queries technically and contextually
  • Keyword relevance to the current stage of the buying cycle target audiences find themselves in -- this is where the stages of search (navigational, informational, and transactional) come in
  • Persuasion -- how much the keyword contributes to the decision-making of target audiences to click through or make a phone call

Tracking calls from PPC ads shows you what ad groups and what certain keywords within those ad groups work really well across all three dimensions, especially persuasion.

Identifying High Performance Conversion Pages

We mentioned conversion optimization -- a crucial and advanced facet of marketing. Call tracking and analytics can also provide invaluable data on high performing conversion pages.

The obvious way of doing this is by assigning specific numbers to specific conversion pages and track how well they performed based on the calls coming in. Take it a step further, and you can match the numbers of organic and paid traffic coming into a conversion page and split the conversion rate between methods of contact depending on what you indicated per page (email, submission form, phone number, etc). Get a bit more advanced and you can tell your sales team to always ask how leads found your conversion pages, and then cross-reference Google analytics data to check conversion paths and see what your conversion funnel looks like in action.

Analyzing the conversion path via analytics and directly asking your leads can show you high impact pages that led to a conversion page outperforming others. Every consumer journey towards any conversion page is multi-touch, and often purchase decisions are influenced not only by the conversion page, but the touch points that came before it.

Conversely, Finding Low Performing Pages

In the same way call tracking can identify high performance conversion pages, it can also provide data on low performing conversion pages.

By virtue of the lack of calls coming in from specific numbers assigned to specific conversion pages compared to others, you can already tell some aren't as effective as the rest. You should perform a nuanced analysis of this, however, and check a few things, like:

  • Frequency of other communication methods indicated in poorly performing conversion page -- perhaps this conversion page displays a service or product that target audiences simply have no reason to call in for so they use email and submission forms instead.
  • Marketing copy -- is the marketing copy in these conversion pages low quality or do they subtly hint against calling?
  • Conversion path -- again, as explained above, the touch points before the conversion page affect the purchase decision, and you might notice that poorly performing pages don't have that many touch points pointing towards it, hinting that the conversion page itself may not be to blame for poor performance.

Training Marketing and Sales Employees

Finally, call tracking and analytics comes with call recording. You can listen in on previous calls to train your marketing and sales staff by showing them what works, what doesn't, and what can be changed for the better.

In fact, training your people in in-person, over-the-phone sales is crucial, because this is the make or break moment.

The Dos & Don’ts Of Pitching Your Business Ideas

pitching your business ideas

There are a number of reasons why you might be wanting to pitch your business idea, maybe you are looking for investment to get your business up and running. It could be a case of wanting to meet new people, make valuable contacts and get your business in front of the right people. Or you could be simply trying to sell your new company and service to a new client who’s interested in your business.

With all this in mind, below is a list of some of the dos and don'ts that you need to consider before delivering your pitch in front of the right people.

The do's and don'ts of pitching your business ideas

What to do:

1. Show a little confidence:

Let’s face it, if you don’t show that you believe in your company how can you expect anybody else to? When you start your own business you have the ability to sell what you are providing in which ever way you see fit. You need to love your idea the most and show enthusiasm. Make everyone feel good about your business and show them how your company can help make their life easier and more fulfilling.

2. Plan, plan and plan some more:

You know the saying, ‘Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail’ and don’t you forget it! If you don’t use your time wisely and prepare then how are you expected to get anywhere? You cannot afford to not use this opportunity to your full advantage. Make sure you have included all the important information in your pitch and explain it in simple terms. People are going to be new to your product so don’t use technical terms and expect them to get it, because they won’t but they will switch off.

3. Practice:

Oh so you think because you have a cleverly devised plan that it is all going to work out just fine? Wrong. You now need to practice. And no I don’t mean to yourself in the mirror. I mean in-front of real people. Family, friends and quite frankly anyone who will listen. The reason being, (hopefully) people will be honest with you and if they don’t understand what you are saying they will point it out so you can sort it before pitching for real.

4. Speaking of honesty…

Be honest. You will more than likely be asked a few questions once your pitch is over and if you don’t know the answer then say you don’t. Then, thank them for raising the issue and you will be looking into it further to find the answer. Panic talking will only show weakness and have people lose faith in your business. You are not going to have all the answers but you can find them to make for a stronger and more successful company.

5. Start with the problem:

Then solve it. Assuming you have done a huge amount of research before setting up your business you will be very aware of what problem you are trying to solve and how your company has the perfect solution. This problem needs to be presented in a way that your audience will relate and identify with. If you have a very specific target market then you need to show how that market needs your business to solve their predicament. Then, go through step by step how your company solves their issues.

What not to do:

1. Don’t be over-confident:

Contrary to what I said earlier being over-confident can kill any chance you have. Pitching your idea is having the opportunity to let people listen to your idea and sell it to them. If you act like their opinion or   approval is irrelevant potential customers will switch off and you will be just another one of many.

2. Speak too much:

Silence shouldn't be seen as a negative. People need time to process all the information you are throwing at them. If you don’t give them that necessary time, they won’t be able to keep up which will only increase the chance of them switching off. Engage with your audience of course, but ensure that you include the necessary breather for them to keep up and ask questions.

3. Overload your pitch:

As well as not speaking too much, you also need to make sure that what you do say counts. Do not overload your pitch with unnecessary details that only complicate what you are trying to say. Clear and precise points are key, starting with the least exciting feature gradually building up to generate interest and excitement in your company.

4. Read from a script:

Improvise. And this is why you need to practice because you don’t want to go in without a clear frame of mind of what needs to be included. Reading from a script appears fake and insincere which isn't going to resonate with your audience. Remember because of this, your pitch may not be the same each time you deliver it, which is a good thing - tailor it to different audiences as this will give it an ‘edge’ over the rest.

5. Be a joker:

But have a sense of humor. Being overly funny is going to poke fun at your business without you necessarily realizing it. You need to find the balance of serious vs playful so you company has authority as well as a personality. Be aware of who you are pitching too but never take yourself too seriously either.

Presenting your pitch isn't going to be easy but it is the perfect opportunity to get your business out there so don’t be afraid, revel in the challenge.

Are you looking forward to pitching your business?

Do you have any tips that you followed to help you when you presented yours?

Responsive Design

With mobile devices it is even more important to keep attention of users, than it is with people who visit regular websites. Failing to understand the importance of responsive design will ultimately lead to the loss of mobile users. If you want to encourage your users to visit your website, there are a few trends in responsive design that will mark the year 2015.

The keystone of responsive web design (RWD) is that it changes in size to fit the device that is viewing it. In near future more and more people will be using mobile devices for browsing the web. This is the reason why websites today are switching to responsive design.

Adaptive delivery

In the last few years, websites with responsive design were bugged with longer loading problems, as different codes were being used for tablets, computers and mobiles. New technologies, however, have made it possible to avoid this problem and secure faster loading of your content. Adaptive Delivery technology enables the device detection and loading of different types of HTML and CSS coding, accordingly. This solution ensures that content and images will be loaded promptly, making responsive design ideal for users who have limited attention span.

A new job profile emerging

One feature of responsive design is that it involves different variations on several platforms, which then require analysts to manage them. Responsive design analysts is sure to be an important job profile for serious organizations in near future. This job will also benefit web hosting companies, as will include finding a perfect balance between responsiveness and information, not unlike the one of mobile editors or emerging platforms editors.

Keeping the content simple

One for the reasons behind the popularity of responsive design is because it is mobile friendly. With the increase in number of people browsing the web and looking the websites on their mobile devices, rather than on computes, simplification of content is a trend of the future. We mustn’t forget that unlike regular web users, mobile users are often looking for very specific information. If you simplify the content, it will be more accessible for the users, who will in return appreciate the faster time they needed to reach the wanted information. In other words, their experience of your site will surge.

Frameworks backing up RWD

RWD frameworks are tools that help designers craft sites that are visually rich and still use simple interfaces, by offering them sets of scripts and standards. There is a large set of templates that can be adapted to needs of different types if users. In addition these aspects can still be possible together with stunning content. Some examples of responsive framework are Gumby, Bootstrap, and Get UI Kit.

Simpler emailing experience

While responsive design is ideal concept for web publishing, it is less perfect for email marketing. A recent study has brought up that although at least 50 per cent of users use mobile devices for opening their emails, responsive design still hasn’t encouraged more conversations or even responses. Still, making the email content fit the users’ screens is important nonetheless. There are other options for the, aside from responsive design. First, you may simplify your template, ensuring that its width in not more than 600 pixels. Second, buttons and ling should be easy to click, no matter if the users are using their thumbs or styluses.

The latest technologies and developments will continue to be the mainstay of responsive web design in 2015. Understanding their increased complexity on the ground level, response design analysts will have to bring your website ahead of the curve. The benefits of their joint endeavors will be more effective brand connecting with users. In addition, there is an increased room for collecting data, which has always been one of the pillars of business growth and brand connecting.

Top Valentine’s Day Marketing Ideas For Small Businesses

Print

Most small businesses are going to want to capitalize on every holiday they can. Big sales, special merchandise, and even themed music are great ways to lure people into your store for Christmas and Halloween shopping.

But what do you do for Valentine's Day, especially if your business is not focused on things such as flowers, candies, or greeting cards? Is there anything you can do at all to stimulate some business on the day of love?

Yes there is! Check out our tips below for stimulating some money flow in early February. You may be surprised what you can do to bring some love to your business.

Hold A Sale Or Run A Promotion

One of the easiest things you can do is simply run a promotion or hold a sale if you move merchandise. Don't know how selling insurance will help people think of love? Remind them that getting life insurance (during your special promotion, of course) is giving a gift to the rest of the family. What about web design services? Offer to create a web page about your client's spouse or lover for cheap. This can lead to good reviews and more possible business in the future.

Create Valentine's Versions Of Your Products... Or At Least Angle Them That Way

Sell products? Do what you can to make them more festive for the Valentine season. Beginning in mid-January, launch an alternative version of your product that offers some love for, well, love!

But what if you sell a product like lumber? (Or something else that is very non-Valentine's.) Now is your chance to romanticize some types of lumber. Have a big stack of cherry woods? Remind your buyers that you are running a sale on it so they can build beautiful items for their loved ones. If you offer some pre-fab items, create furniture with feminine motifs.

Use your imagination to come up with exciting ways to add some love to your products. If lumber can be made romantic, anything can!

Have A Contest

Sometimes pumping business during this time of year is as simple as running a contest. Offer people who come into your shop a chance to win a romantic getaway weekend with every purchase. Can't quite afford that? A "love basket" full of soaps, candies, and candles can make a great raffle or giveaway gift. Your imagination is the only thing inhibiting your ability to come up with a great prize for your regulars.

There a million marketing opportunities every Valentine's Day. To write them off because you don't have a traditionally "romantic" product or service is seriously selling yourself short. Take a look at what you offer and decide how you can morph it into something everyone will want this Valentine's Day. Sales, special products, or even running a contest to bring people into your store will all go a long way in making your red February look a little more black - and that's good for business.

6 Tips to Having a Great Website

Fivenson Studios Amazing Website

It’s essential to have a website that looks good; however, it’s even more important to have a website that is accessible and usable for visitors. Following the six tips below will help you create a more user-friendly webpage.

1-Design a mobile-friendly/ responsive website.

In 2015, having a website that is mobile-friendly is key to a company’s success. Studies show that 80% of people access the web via mobile devices. Google has made it clear that it will penalize anyone who doesn’t have a mobile-friendly website. This week, the company sent out a warning through webmaster tools alerting anyone who doesn’t have a mobile friendly website to “fix mobile usability issues found on www.yourdomain.com”. If you would like to see if your website is mobile-friendly, click the link below: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

2 -Design with HTML5 and CSS rather than table-based layout.

HTML5 & CSS-based layouts will make your website more accessible to a higher number of users. All internet browsers support HTML5 & CSS, and it is more flexible for various devices than table-based design. Pages designed with HTML5 & CSS will also load faster and are easier for search engines to index than table-based pages.

3- Create great content

In order for your site to stand out you will need to provide rich content.  Your site must focus on the user’ interests. To accomplish this, you will need to become a story teller weather it’s about a products or services, everything has a story and you need to be the one telling it. Writing great content will be a lot of work but it will pay off in the end. It will increase your ranking on Google, Bing and Yahoo. You should decide how you are going to reach and communicate with your clients and customers: will they purchase products, read articles, subscribe to newsletters, communicate through blogs and online communities? If a business fails to provide rich content on its website expect that site’s effectiveness to greatly diminish. For example, a site that is well-designed without great content is like having a Ferrari without an engine. You will get no were and you will be penalize by search engines.

4 – Include a contact form on your site.

One of the keys to usability is allowing visitors to submit feedback. A simple contact form is an appropriate way to receive questions and comments from your visitors. At the least, your website should list a contact email address for visitors to submit comments and/or questions.

5 – Use site-wide search engines and/or sitemaps.

Larger websites can make their content easier to navigate by including a search engine. Google and Bing both provide a free service that allows you to create a specialized search engine for your site. Smaller websites may find a sitemap to be more useful and effective.

6 – Use logical and consistent navigation.

Usability is increased when visitors can quickly and easily navigate through your website.  This is usually accomplished with a navigation menu that appears on every page. Changing the navigation and its location from page to page can frustrate visitors and cause them to leave your site. Consider using a similar menu design on each page to provide your visitors with logical and consistent navigation.

Top 7 Marketing Trends Of 2015

Ann Arbor Graphic Design Fivenson Studios

Mobile-optimization is the new future. Optimizing pertaining to mobile has become an important concern to companies in 2014, nevertheless 2015 stands out as the calendar year that mobile strategies will proceed beyond the basic development of a mobile friendly site as well as apps for mobile. Business will primarily focus on content, mobile optimization and social media marketing. The compiles, brands and other business that don't get on board with these changes will get left behind. In 2015 we will see a great number of business popping up calming to do "content management and social media content development"

This year we will see a lot of changes that take place within the development of the "internet" with all these changes taking place Google has already changed its webmasters tools, adding in a section called Mobile Usability. Google has make it clear if you don't have a mobile friendly website, it will affect your ranking. In other words it’s relevant for search engine optimization to have a mobile friendly site.

I forecast that in 2015 companies and brands will become more aware of how important social media, along with mobile optimization will be to the future of its success.  Businesses will begin to realize the need of having social media marketing method that relates to its mobile audience. Social media marketing ads will increase as brands realize the importance of what social media can offer them.

In the beginning part of 2014, we saw Facebook reporting increased ad revenue of ten percent. As organic post reach continues to slip, and as Facebook restricts what types of posts are shown in users’ feeds, paid advertising is solely on the brink to increase as businesses struggle to take care of traffic and sales from social media channels.

Businesses are seeing positive results from their investment in social media, with large exposure and traffic to sites. Twitter’s new advertising options is currently in beta mode, where payment is triggered by specific actions like web site clicks, email opting in, along with downloads of apps. This will mean small to medium-sized businesses are going to be more likely to invest in these objective-based campaigns

According to the Business to Business (B2B) Content marketing Benchmarks report, ninety three percent of Business to Business (B2B) marketers said they used content marketing in 2014, and forty two percent said they thought-about their strategy effective (up from thirty six percent last year).

As marketers still see the advantages of their content strategies PPC, SEO and social media are re-allocated to content marketing efforts. A significant struggle, however, are finding ways to stand out amidst the throngs of different content vying for attention.  Online video content, research-intensive content, and also content that abides from the 12 quality metrics are usually just what provides firms a plus around their competitors.

Businesses are increasingly willing to invest in mobile content, together with making short-form content that’s easily readable on mobile devices, being familiar with the audience’s mobile habits as well as positioning additional focus on online video as well as images that’s purely consumed through mobile.

Businesses can come to the one marketing asset that they will control entirely; their email list. One way in which they’ll try this is to repurpose existing content into downloadable PDFs such as whitepapers or eBooks, which may be offered as opt-in incentives to build an email list. This revived specialize in email marketing will intertwine with content marketing to blur the lines between email and content marketing.

In 2015, brands can begin to understand the need of differentiating themselves from their competitors when it involves emails. As brands notice the worth of content marketing, they’ll begin to streamline their email content so as to avoid redundancy.

The lines between content marketing, SEO, & social media will become more smudged. Content marketing has been depicted by a few as the "new SEO;" which is to some degree exact. SEO and content marketing will proceed as two different things, however interlaced trains that depend on one another for achievement. That said, content marketing is now the primary influencer of search visibility. Organizations that don't put resources into a robust content marketing will find that their SEO battles are inadequate at best, and harming to their pursuit of visibility.

SEO will come to be seen more as a subset of online marketing, dealing with technical aspects such as meta tags, indexing issues, penalty recovery, and keyword research. Social media then again will come to be seen as an important speaker of any substance system. While organizations have been centered around making great content, less center has been given to advancing and conveying that content.

Organizations will likewise understand the other advantages of social media marketing, including expanded brand recognition and brand power, enhanced client experiences and higher change rates. Companies & Brands will scramble to humanize itself. Brands who engage and develop relationships with their fans, followers and email subscribers will see tremendous benefits, all of which will ultimately increase their bottom line.

Brands that are able to connect with their audience on a human-level will enjoy higher conversion rates, better brand loyalty, faster audience growth, and happier customers. The rise of social media, brands will realize that their customers are on social media channels to interact with other people, not with brands and corporate-sounding lingo. I believe a company’s ability to humanize their brand will be the single most important factor in their success using social media.
