Earth Day 45th Anniversary

earth day 45th anniversary

Earth day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson. It started as a grassroots movement, Earth Day created public support for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and contributed to the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the End angered Species Act and several other environmental laws.

Reflecting on the 10th anniversary of Earth Day, Nelson wrote in an article for EPA Journal, "It was on that day that Americans made it clear that they understood and were deeply concerned over the deterioration of our environment and the mindless dissipation of our resources." In 1995, President Bill Clinton awarded Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for being the founder of Earth Day.

Modern Earth Day Earth Day continued to grow over the yearsEarth Day 2000 included 5,000 environmental groups and 184 countries.
In 2010, for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, 225,000 people gathered at the National Mall for a climate rallyThe impact of Earth Day Although Earth Day has become mainstream, surveys show that environmentalism may be stumbling.
Earth Day is still important because it reminds people to think about humanity's values, the threats the planet faces and ways to help protect the environment.

Google Mobile-Friendly Update Is Finally Here! “Mobilegeddon.”

Google Mobile Friendly Updae tips fivenson studios graphic design

If your website traffic plummets suddenly, you can blame it on "Mobilegeddon.".

A website ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in a search query could hypothetically fall to ninth or 10th place, causing a loss of thousands of dollars in potential business, says independent analyst Greg Sterling.

In 2012, Demand Media posted a $6.4 million loss in an earnings report, and blamed the loss on changes to Google's Panda update, which removed the firm from top spots.

http://bcove.me/8bbby123

Overall, "as many as 40% of top websites are not currently mobile-friendly," says Sterling.

Today, Google is flipping the proverbial switch and is rolling out its mobile-friendly update – something that could potentially affect over 40 percent of Fortune 500 websites, according to recent tests.

And after running some tests this year, it appears that progress has been slow – as noted above, just over half (52 percent) of the Fortune 500 operated mobile-friendly websites ahead of Google’s update.

According to eMarketer, the number of smartphone users worldwide will surpass 2 billion in 2016, and will come close to hitting that mark this year.

In 2015, the firm said there will be over 1.91 billion smartphone users across the globe.

Google’s decision to force website owners to make their sites work better on mobile devices, then, isn’t just about making web searchers happier; it’s about making sure that Google can retain its position as a useful service in the age of mobile.

10 Ridiculously Easy Ways to Motivate Your Employees

In today’s fast-paced business world, companies want their employees to work hard and work fast. As an employer, you want to encourage your employees to be productive and take action as much as possible. Luckily for you, this doesn’t require any sort of expensive fees or complicated rituals. Motivating your employees can be simple, easy, cheap, and even fun. Plus, you will be grateful when you see the results. The best way to motivate your employees is to make them happy. Here are a few ideas:

10 Ridiculously Easy Ways to Motivate Your Employees

1. Set goals.

Employee autonomy is a great thing, but it can be overwhelming when one worker has too many duties or doesn’t quite know which duties to work on. They might be stuck deciding between several different tasks and be confused as to which one to complete first. Even worse, the employee might have to multi-task, something that is terrible for productivity.

Make sure each employee has a clear to-do list to follow each day. It should allow the worker to clearly prioritize the important tasks that must be completed first and recognize which tasks should be completed afterwards. It will also motivate your employee to get everything done by the end of the day so that there is less temptation to goof around.

2. Give recognition.

Everyone wants to feel recognized and nobody wants to be thought of as simply another cog in the machine. You should praise each employee’s efforts when he or she does a good job. Take note of who is working hard and who is producing results. Give your exceptional employees the recognition they deserve. This could be as simple as a pat on the back or as lofty as labeling them as the “Employee of the Month.”

3. Be happy.

Mood is infectious, especially when it is coming from a leader. If you show up to work every day with a scowl on your face and a bad attitude, your employees will eventually feel irritable and demotivated. If you show up to work every day with a smile on your face and an uplifting attitude, your employees will feel happier and be more productive.

Remember that a leader has the power to dramatically shape how his or her company operates. You should be a reflection of your ideal employee. Work hard and your employees will work hard as well. Have confidence and your employees will become more confident in your company and your leadership abilities. Be comfortable and your employees will be able to relax.

4. Foster teamwork.

Employees who have a lot of friends at work are much more productive (unless they spent all their time socializing instead of working). An infographic from Officevibe shows that employees who have friends at work have a 35% higher commitment to quality, are 1.3 times more likely to get positive feedback in the past six months, and benefit 137% more from personal development support.

On the other hand, employees who feel excluded are more likely to behave badly. A 2014 study from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business divided participants into groups of four and asked them to complete two tests that would be scored against other groups. The participants were all told that only three members of each group were allowed to take the second test. This would be determined by a vote. Researchers told some participants that they received three votes and told others that they only received one vote.

After the participants were told how many group members supposedly voted for them, they were asked to unscramble an anagram and record how many times they solved it. There was just one catch: the anagram was impossible to solve. Needless to say, the participants who were primed to feel excluded reported that they solved the impossible anagram more often than the ones who were primed to feel included.

5. Talk walks.

Sometimes employees just need a quick break to refresh their mind. Believe it or not, taking a quick walk can help improve productivity and creativity. Walking gets the body exercise and helps blood flow to the brain and throughout the body. It also helps employees take a break from the ill effects of prolonged sitting, typing, or staring at a computer screen.

Research from Stanford conducted three experiments to test how walking could affect someone’s “divergent thinking.” The researchers found that students who walked for a few minutes produced 60% more creative output compared to the students who sat down. In a fourth experiment, researchers asked students to come up with quality analogies for sudden phrases. Students who walked beforehand performed twice as good as students who sat down.

6. Allow feedback.

Every employee wants to feel valued in some way or another. Give everyone a chance to participate and allow everyone to have their own voice and opinions. You never know what sort of awesome ideas could come from your employees. They could have some wild out-of-the-box solutions that nobody else would have come up with. This will not only help the company develop new marketing strategies; it also helps employees feel more included.

7. Give them a sense of purpose.

One way to dramatically improve productivity is to make sure that employees have a sense of purpose when they are working for the company. Perhaps they want to use their job as an opportunity to brush up on their own skills or to help give back to the community.

Find out what your employee’s goals are and try to align the company’s needs with their own goals. For example, someone who wants to improve their communication skills would have a great opportunity interacting with customers. This will give employees something to look forward to every day.

8. Provide food.

Getting free lunch every day is an awesome benefit that most employees love to receive. Of course, you don’t need to be that elaborate, but you should at least offer some coffee, tea, and healthy snacks.

Hungry employees don’t have the energy to work their best or resist distractions. Employees who eat junk food might find themselves exhausted after a sugar crash. Provide some KIND bars or fruit so that your employees can snack on while they work. Food that is good for the brain is also good for productivity.

9. Pay attention to the time of day.

Everyone has their own chronotype that dictates when that individual works best. For example, “night owls” work better during evening shifts and “morning larks” work better earlier in the day. When owls are working in the morning and larks in the evening, their productivity and morality both drop.

A trio of researchers -- Christopher M. Barnes, Brian Gunia, and Sunita Sah -- found that certain people are more unethical during certain times of the day. The researchers conducted two experiments. In the first one, participants were asked to anonymously report how many matrices they solved in a given period of time. The higher amount of correct answers yielded a higher financial reward. The results found that night owls were more likely to cheat at the experiment was conducted in the morning.

A second experiment was conducted at night. Participants were asked to calculate the numbers they rolled on dice. Once again, higher results meant more pay. The average of all die rolls is 3.5, so it was easy to tell who may be over-reporting. Consistent with their research, morning larks were more likely to cheat at night.

This happens because people who work during times incompatible with their chronotype have less energy and therefore have a harder time resisting temptation. It also makes them far less productive because they are more tired.

10. Promote healthy competition.

What will make people want to work the hardest? Winning a competition, of course! Find ways to encourage employees to compete in a healthy way, not a way that encourages them to sabotage their opponents.

For example, your company can reward the employee who sells the most during a given time period. This will encourage competitive employees to work harder in order to get the best results. Just make sure that the competition is fun for everyone who participates.

Google Will Punish Your Site After April 21st

Google Mobile Friendly Webste Fivenson Studios Graphic Design

Back in November 2014, Google gave its first guidance about the impending algorithm changes to affect mobile SEO which were summarized in our past blog post Top 7 Marketing Trends

More recently, Google has been unusually specific and has revealed on its blog that there will be an algorithm update on the 21st April 2015, that will expand their use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.

Google has announced that this update will take place in ‘real-time’, meaning that if changes are made to make websites more mobile-friendly, as soon as the changes have been indexed by Google the benefits will be shown.

Google has also said that this algorithm update will impact sites on a page-by-page basis, meaning that only those pages that are not mobile-friendly will be impacted, rather than the wider domain.

If your site is missing these 'Mobile-Friendly' labels you are likely to have a problem come the 21st of April.

A little about Google’s mobile-friendly updates

1.The update will heavily favor mobile-friendly pages in mobile search results.

2.“Mobile” means smartphones, not tablets.

3.The update is expected to roll out April 21, 2015, and could take up to a week to reach all sites.

4.The update will only effect search results on mobile devices, not desktop search results.

5.In addition to mobile-friendly web pages, this update will also improve rankings of index apps, if the user is logged in, and has the app installed.

6.Web pages that are not mobile-friendly can and will be dropped from high rankings in favor of mobile-friendly web pages.

7.Only the non-mobile-friendly page’s on your website will be negatively effected in mobile search results.

8.Websites and web pages that are not mobile-friendly will not be effected in desktop search results.

9.An entire website doesn’t need to be mobile-friendly for one mobile-friendly page, on that site, to be ranked high in mobile search results.

10.The mobile-friendly update will effect all languages, world-wide.

11.Google considers each page either mobile-friendly or not. There is no in-between.

12.Google recommends using responsive design above all other mobile-friendly options. This will minimize the risk crawling errors.

13.Google’s mobile-friendly update will effect more sites than Panda and Penguin.

14.Mobile-friendly pages must build a reputation for quality content on their own, apart from their desktop equivalent.

15.Mobile-friendly pages show a “Mobile-friendly” label in mobile search results.

Implementing a Sustainable Social Media Marketing Strategy

When you enter the world of social media marketing, you should be aware that every move your business makes on social networks should be a cogwheel in a larger marketing strategy. In other words, every post, comment, Tweet or shared content should work towards a singular goal, and guided by a pre-defined marketing plan. It isn’t as complicated as it seems, when a well-designed social media marketing strategy is deployed. You don’t have to be a social media guru to do this. These steps will teach you how to drive your marketing actions on social media towards a desired goal.

Social Media Strategy Fivenson Studios Graphic Design Ann Arbor Mi

The Definition

In a nutshell, a social media marketing plan is a collection of every action you plan to launch on social networks on behalf of your business marketing strategy. It should consist of an audit on your accounts present-day rating, goals for where you want them to be in a defined point in future and the tools and tactics that you will use to make it happen.

Your plan will be more effective in its implementation if you make it in high resolution – determine the smallest part to the detail. This is not a part where a broad strategy approach works. Keep it concise and specific, while using this plan as an indicator that will show you whether you are making progress in social media or you are staying behind.

Creating Objectives and Goals

By defining social media objectives you can react in a short time and adjust the strategy when your actions are not meeting your expectations. The goals should follow up your marketing strategy. They are a measure of your success and the likely outcome of your investment. Goals should focus more on advanced metrics like generated leads, referred or sentiment website traffic. These goals should be set using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound) approach.

Social Media Audit

One of elements of your social media marketing plan will be the assessment of your actual social media use. You need to find out who is connected to you on social media and which social media platforms your target audience uses. In the same way, if you want to establish a sound social media strategy you should make a comparison of your media presence with the one of your competitors. The audit will crystalize which accounts are bearing fruit and which are unnecessary.

Updating or Creating New Accounts

When you have audited your accounts, you need to improve your online image. Analyze which social media platforms work best for your goals and make profiles on every platform of interest, which will be based on your broader business goals and the target audience. It pays out to know that each social media platform attracts different audience and should be approached in a different way.

Learn from the Best

Your consumers and prospects are already active on social media, and so is your competition. That means that you have a vast pool of experiences and good, but also the bad, examples to learn from. Analyze your competitor’s successful campaigns and implement those elements on your business marketing plan. Also, try to draw inspiration from your consumers. Emulate their Tweet style, pay attention where and when they are active. Finally, you can look up to corporate giants like Virgin Group or Red Bull who are making great things in social media marketing.

Happy Easter

happy easter from your friends at fivenson studos

Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time.

Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry, a time in which Christians believe he survived various temptations by the devil.

The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples; Good Friday, which honors the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection.

The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven.

Happy Passover

happy passover

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan.

At the stroke of midnight of 15 Nissan in the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), G‑d visited the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians, killing all their firstborn.

Six hundred thousand adult males, plus many more women and children, left Egypt on that day, and began the trek to Mount Sinai and their birth as G‑d’s chosen people.

To commemorate the unleavened bread that the Israelites ate when they left Egypt, we don’t eat—or even retain in our possession—any chametz from midday of the day before Passover until the conclusion of the holiday.

It involves a full-out spring-cleaning search-and-destroy mission during the weeks before Passover, and culminates with a ceremonial search for chametz on the night before Passover, and then a burning of the chametz ceremony on the morning before the holiday.

5 Innovative Ways You Can Use Call Tracking to Optimize Marketing Efforts

5 Innovative Ways You Can Use Call Tracking to Optimize Marketing Efforts

In today's modern world where the consumer has all the power, an integrated and multi-channel approach to marketing is becoming increasingly important, and incorporating call tracking into your campaigns can open up innovative ways that you can optimize them.

Tracking Online and Offline Advertising Mediums

When people talk about phone call tracking and analytics, they think it's a limited niche with limited options. In reality, however, the limitations are mostly due to lack of an innovative approach to merging call tracking with the rest of a brand's marketing and sales campaign. You can actually use call analytics to track the performance of advertising channels. Better yet: call tracking actually tracks both offline and online channels.

Here's a quick example: how do you track an advertising campaign that uses newspaper ads and pay per click (PPC) ads? Simply place separate phone numbers in both channels to track calls. Combine the data from inquiries, qualified leads, and conversions from the phone calls to the other data collected from both channels like newspaper reach and PPC ad frequency and click-through rates and you have a comprehensive overview of offline and online performance under one campaign.

Monitoring Keyword Performance in PPC

Since we already touched upon PPC, let's look at another innovative way call tracking can contribute to marketing optimization: keyword performance tracking.

Keyword performance is often a metric relegated to Google analytics and the digital realm, but any conversion optimization expert will tell you that keywords play a vital role in the persuasion of target audiences. Keywords are much more nuanced than people often think, especially in paid advertising.

Keyword performance affect at least three main factors that all contribute to the efficacy of a PPC ad:

  • Keyword targeting that matches queries technically and contextually
  • Keyword relevance to the current stage of the buying cycle target audiences find themselves in -- this is where the stages of search (navigational, informational, and transactional) come in
  • Persuasion -- how much the keyword contributes to the decision-making of target audiences to click through or make a phone call

Tracking calls from PPC ads shows you what ad groups and what certain keywords within those ad groups work really well across all three dimensions, especially persuasion.

Identifying High Performance Conversion Pages

We mentioned conversion optimization -- a crucial and advanced facet of marketing. Call tracking and analytics can also provide invaluable data on high performing conversion pages.

The obvious way of doing this is by assigning specific numbers to specific conversion pages and track how well they performed based on the calls coming in. Take it a step further, and you can match the numbers of organic and paid traffic coming into a conversion page and split the conversion rate between methods of contact depending on what you indicated per page (email, submission form, phone number, etc). Get a bit more advanced and you can tell your sales team to always ask how leads found your conversion pages, and then cross-reference Google analytics data to check conversion paths and see what your conversion funnel looks like in action.

Analyzing the conversion path via analytics and directly asking your leads can show you high impact pages that led to a conversion page outperforming others. Every consumer journey towards any conversion page is multi-touch, and often purchase decisions are influenced not only by the conversion page, but the touch points that came before it.

Conversely, Finding Low Performing Pages

In the same way call tracking can identify high performance conversion pages, it can also provide data on low performing conversion pages.

By virtue of the lack of calls coming in from specific numbers assigned to specific conversion pages compared to others, you can already tell some aren't as effective as the rest. You should perform a nuanced analysis of this, however, and check a few things, like:

  • Frequency of other communication methods indicated in poorly performing conversion page -- perhaps this conversion page displays a service or product that target audiences simply have no reason to call in for so they use email and submission forms instead.
  • Marketing copy -- is the marketing copy in these conversion pages low quality or do they subtly hint against calling?
  • Conversion path -- again, as explained above, the touch points before the conversion page affect the purchase decision, and you might notice that poorly performing pages don't have that many touch points pointing towards it, hinting that the conversion page itself may not be to blame for poor performance.

Training Marketing and Sales Employees

Finally, call tracking and analytics comes with call recording. You can listen in on previous calls to train your marketing and sales staff by showing them what works, what doesn't, and what can be changed for the better.

In fact, training your people in in-person, over-the-phone sales is crucial, because this is the make or break moment.

A Little About April Fools’ Day

Happy april fools

April Fools' Day, sometimes called All Fools' Day, is one of the most light-hearted days of the year.

New Year's Day Moves Ancient cultures, including those of the Romans and Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1.

The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan. 1.

That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's Day to Jan. 1.

According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1.

The first is that it doesn't fully account for the spread of April Fools' Day to other European countries.

The Gregorian calendar was not adopted by England until 1752, for example, but April Fools' Day was already well established there by that point.

Constantine and Kugel another explanation of the origins of April Fools' Day was provided by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University.

Constantine, amused, allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day.

Kugel passed an edict calling for absurdity on that day, and the custom became an annual event.

"In a way," explained Prof. Boskin, "It was a very serious day. In those times fools were really wise men. It was the role of jesters to put things in perspective with humor." This explanation was brought to the public's attention in an Associated Press article printed by many newspapers in 1983.

Spring Fever it is worth noting that many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks.

Observances around the World April Fools' Day is observed throughout the Western world.

Practices include sending someone on a "Fool's errand," looking for things that don’t exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.

The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying “Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.
